The cortex, which is the outermost and latest development in the evolution of the vertebrate brain, is believed to be the central site of consciousness and intelligence, performing the most complex associative and mnemonic functions.Cognitive aspects of learning the gray matter (the fissured and convoluted outer surface) is largely composed of neuron cell bodies stacked approximately 3 mm thick.
